Affiliate Marketing for Beginners

When I started blogging I had no clue what affiliate marketing was. Take it, it was 2012 and not that many people knew much about blogging let alone affiliate marketing. It wasn't until 2013-2014 where blogging and affiliate marketing started to take a rise.

That's when I decide to take more of an interest in using affiliates links to diversify my income. Although it wasn't my only source of income it did help to not have to rely on just one form of income!

So as I'm starting to get back into the whole affiliate marketing, mostly for my own products, I thought I would share some top tips to help you start your journey into the world of  affiliate marketing.

What is affiliate marketing?

In the simplest form, it is a way for someone to earn a commission through promoting and selling a company or individual's product and getting paid. One of the easiest ways to make money in your sleep!

How do affiliate marketing work?

When  you recommend a product or service to your audience through your affiliate link, someone purchases the product or service based on the way you recommend it. Then you earn a commission from that sale.

Let's recap!

  1. You Recommend Product
  2. Customer Buys Product (within a specific time frame)
  3. You Get Paid a Commission for those sales
Take for instance you are a fashion blogger who has her own fashion blog. You love talking about a particular clothing store on your blog and social media.

You find out they have their own affiliate program. When you sign up you can get a special link with your very own affiliate ID. Every time you use that link in your blog posts or social media and someone clicks on it, your affiliate ID follows them for a while. When they decide to buy something, (within a certain time frame, known as an affiliate cookie😋), you will earn a commission!

What is an affiliate cookie?

An Affiliate cookie is the info that is sent when someone clicks on your affiliate link. When they purchase, that info is then sent over to your Affiliate ID. If they do not to purchase in the allotted time frame that cookie is no long valid😝. The cookie is different depending on the affiliate program for instance She Bold Stocks Affiliates have a whopping 999 days! Make sure to find out what it is before when you sign up.

How do Affiliate Commissions work?

There are 3 different ways you can earn a commission.
  1. Percentage per sell- you get a set percentage of the sale of a product you promote. Take The Contract Shop for instance where you get 30% commission on any sale from their shop.
  2. Commission per lead- you get a fixed amount when a product you promote acquires a new lead. Such as someone signing up for ShareASale pays you $1 for every lead you refer that signs up to the company.
  3. Flat Rate- this is a fix amount that you will recieve regardless of the price of the product. For instance Bluhost offers $65 commission on any hosting plan that’s purchased through your link whether it’s 12 months or 3 years.

How to Monetize your blog with Affiliate Links?

First find the right affiliate program that meshes well with your brand or niche. If you don't have a brand or niche find a shop that you absolutely love and see if they have an affiliate program! Find affiliate programs that is relevant to your audience.

It's important to make sure the program you sign up for is worth your time too! Find affiliate programs that pay anywhere from 10% up 50%! Find out their cookie length too!

She Bold Stock offers members 30% recurring commission plus a $5 sign up bonus! For non members you get 15% recurring commission. Plus they have over 2.5 years cookie length. So if someone doesn't purchase now they may just purchase next year at this very same time!

Be strategic with your affiliate links!

Optimize your affiliate links in subtle ways by placing a cute graphic on your sidebar (like I did). This easily gives access to your affiliate links while visitors are reading your blog. You can also add affiliate links to resource pages, about me pages, contact pages, links in your social media platforms like linkt.ree.

Update old blog posts with your links is also a simply way to add in your links in a honest and just way. Find some of your most popular blog posts that are relevant to your affiliate link and add it there.

For instance if you have a blog post on graphic templates simply pop in a sentence and link about how She Bold Stock helps saves time with creating graphic templates and finding stock photos! Or if you have blog posts about time management in business you can easily pop in how She Bold Stock helps you save time!

I want to make it a point to add trust within your audience. Don't focus all of your efforts on affiliate linking all over the place with no value. Why should they listen to you. Add true value by giving your honest reviews on the network. Why do you love it so much. How has it helped you. Why is it such a great investment. Try create blog posts on social media post detailing why it's a great.
  • Create reviews on the product
  • Compare other competitors
  • Create a tutorial
  • Create a list or round up
  • Share with your email list
  • Add in a bonus for purchasing through your link (great for people who have their own digital products that works well together)
When it comes to creating these types of post remember to ask yourself some questions:

  1. How did you find the  product, what first attracted you to the product?
  2. Why did you make the decision to invest?
  3. How has it helped you? How was it worth it?
  4. Who would you recommend the product too.

How to Create Promotional Plan

So you have awesome blog posts, your sidebar and resource pages are poppin but still no clicks? It's probably because you do have a clear plan of action. You need to have a plan to get people to click. Schedule and automate posts to go out with out you having to do it. Continually repurpose your content so that people will see it. I love using buffer.com. By constantly having your links seen by multiple people you are more prone to getting that long awaited click!

Let's recap

  • Promote less, recommend more
  • Recommend only what you love, use, and believe in
  • Put an affiliate link disclosure on each of your posts
  • Make sure you click "nofollow" when adding an affiliate link to your blog posts to keep your page rank high
  • Be true to what you believe in.

I'm a pretty new blogger and signed up for my first affiliate last month, but haven't made any sales. I just don't want to sound sales-personish.
What is the nofollow thing that you mentioned to keep the page rank high?
