How to Set Your Intention for the New Year

We are 3 weeks into the new year, have you already failed at some of your resolutions? Have you reverted back to the old you, the old you that was literally a month ago?

Look I get it. We get so excited for the new year. We get our new planners, we write out our goals, we actually take action! Then after two weeks that planner is tossed in the corner next to some torn up pieces of paper that was supposed to be your list of goals. Then It's time to wake up earlier and you decide to hit the snooze button for the 11th time that morning and now you are rushing to get ready and go to work. Oh, don't forget your new workout gear tucked away ever so nicely in the  back of your drawer awaiting it's duty. Yes, trust me I get it! Every year that has been me and every December I say I'll change. However, this year I'm setting new intentions, not goals but intentions!

Goals vs Intentions: Knowing the Difference

The problem with goals is that life gets in the way of your goals. Goals is all about analyzing, planning, and reasoning. It focuses solely on the destination, not the journey. We tend to forget the roadblocks  that happen along that journey. This then leads to feelings of failure, losses, and eventually giving up. Yes, we are totally in control of planning out our goals and taking action however the universe has other plans too. The universe has ways of putting adversity in our way. Now don't throw your fist up to the universe in anger. The universe uses these adversities to mold you, to grow you. That's why intentions are better in the long run than goals. Intentions focuses on the here and now and when adversities come we don't get so bent out of shape about it.

Intentions takes away the planning and the focus of the future. Instead, it focuses more on believing in the outcome and letting the universe take control of it. You are allowing your intentions to guide you in every moment of your life.  Intentions come from the heart not from the mind. It comes from a place of love and not out of fear. You set aside the reasoning, planning, and over-analyzing and just intentionally deciding to lead with your heart instead of your mind.

How to set intentions

Well first you need to set aside your control of the situation. You need to mentally trust the process and go along for the ride.

Realize that intentions allows you to focus on yourself and your values in the present moment.  So I challenge to write out your values. What do you believe in? Here are a few values to get you going and check out this article with over 200 core values  that may resonate with you too.
  • Honesty
  • Integrety
  • Abundance
  • Compassion
  • Kindness
  • Love
  • Humor
  • Courage
  • Confidence
  • Trustworthy
  • Happiness
  • Productive
  • Hardworking
  • Healthy
  • etc.
Understand that intentions are daily. It's not to be confused with goals. Intentions are who you want to be be, what you wish to give back to the world, and how you touch the lives of others. You need to set intentions every day. Intentions are your road map to living your life fully and well intentionally! Instead of setting a goal to workout everyday, set your daily intention to feel more motivated and energized to move throughout the day. That way you are focused on how you want to feel and how you want to see yourself in the long run aka more motivated and energized!

 How to set monthly intentions

Setting monthly intentions helps you gain a better outlook on the month ahead while daily intending to focus on those intentions.

  • Ask yourself what do you truly desire. What's most important to you? Think about your values. What is the best version of yourself. How do you want to feel? What will bring your lifelong joy?
  • Write down your intentions. Make a list of everything in your head and then circle a few that you truly want to do for that month. Choose a few that is doable, that are positive, and that are uplifting.
  • Look at it daily. Put it on a sticky note and place next to your mirror, in your office, on your bathroom medicine cabinet. It doesn't matter just look at it daily. This allows you to actually see it. Visually seeing your intentions help you to mindfully do them. At the end of the day think about your intentions. Ask your self how you did, could you do more tomorrow.

How to Set your Yearly Intention

You don't have to focus on a whole phrase, for me its a word...happiness. Find one that means the most to you and intentionally go about your day to day life and live in it, intentionally.

In conclusion...

Remember to not beat yourself up over not doing your intentions perfectly. Your intentions are not your goals. Remember each day is just a step to improve yourself. This is a journey, you experience so much on your journey so live in the moment and each take a step in the right direction.

Setting intentions doesn't negate letting go of your goals. I'm simply saying you need to focus more on the journey and not so much on the destination.

  2. Love this post! I'm all about having a phrase to live by in the New Year instead of making resolutions because it's so easy to fall behind and become intimidated.
